Généralités historiques :"Monastellum" au 120, petit monastère. Ancien
diocèse de Bourges. Un monastère aurait été établi vers 586 par
Ingelbrude, fille de Clotaire Ier, et réuni par la suite à l'abbaye
bénédictine de Beaumont les Tours, qui le conserva jusqu'en 1792.
Détruit par les Normands au IX, rétabli en 813, il fut reconstruit 4
siècles plus tard par Hervé II, seigneur de Vierzon, qui fortifia la
petite ville et fit élever le château (détruit vers 1920) ; cédé aux
religieuses bénédictines en 1686. Qualifiée de ville forte en 1269,
Mennetou reçut une charte de franchises. Passage de Jeanne d'Arc
(inscription sur la porte d'En
Bas) en 1429.
Particularités :Citée médiévale : maisons anciennes, ruelles
pittoresques. Vestiges du château et restes importants des remparts de
la ville : portes d'En Haut, d'En Bas, de Bonne Nouvelle, tours ;
poterne, courtines, chemin de ronde XIII et XV Maison fin XVI ,
Grand-rue : façade ; maison XIII , Grand-rue : pignon orné de
gargouilles ; maison XVI à pans de bois, Grand-Rue.Ancienne grange aux
dîmes, restaurée : façade.Restes de l'ancienne abbaye XIII prieuré
flanquée d'une tour de défense circulaire (ancien tribunal
révolutionnaire) au sud-est de l'enceinte.Église Saint Urbain début XII
, choeur XII à voûtes angevines, nef remaniée XV, bas-côté nord XVI,
clocher en partie XI avec beffroi et flèche ; fonts baptismaux XII en
pierre, retables XVII et XVIII, vitraux XVI, chaire XVII Vallée du Cher.

Historical general information:
"Monastellum" to the 120, small monastery.

A monastery would have been established towards 586 by Ingelbrude, girl
of Clotaire Ier, and joined together by
following the abbey bénédictine deBeaumont Turns, who preserved it until
1792.
Destroyed by the Norman ones to the IX, restored into 813, it was
